LTTE loosing its last stand; continue to take heavy beating - Puthukkudiyiruppu

Sri Lanka Army 53, 55 and 58 Divisions, have now entered into the final phase of the counter terrorist offensive against LTTE with soldiers getting exceptional attrition rates in the battle.

According to the battlefield reports, infantrymen of 58 Division yesterday (Mar 12) further pushed their forward boundaries east of Kombavil Kulam, 4 Km north of Puthukkudiyiruppu. Troops overwhelmed intense resistance of the terrorist with heavy artillery and mortar shells fired from the No Fire Zone and inflicted heavy damages to the terrorist.

Troops after 5 hours of intense fighting since 10, last morning found 11 bodies of LTTE terrorists , 17 T-56 riffles, 7 radio communication sets, 40 hand grenades, and one gas mask . Soldiers of 7 Sinha Regiment, 11 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (11 SLLI), 10 SLLI, 8 Gajaba Regiment (8 GR), 20 GR, 12 GR and 9 Gemunu Watch fought the battle.

Separately, troops of the same Division found 3 bodies of LTTE cadres, 9 T-56 riffles, and few electronic items during evening hours following a confrontation elsewhere. Snipers deployed in forward areas reported 13 terrorist targets acquired.

Troops of 53 Division are now marching east along the A-35 road (Paranthan- Mullaittivu) also withstood heavy indirect fire originated from the No Fire Zone yesterday. During the day's fighting troops found one LTTE body, 15 T-56 riffles , one 81 mm mortar gun, one multi purpose machine gun, one rocket propeller grenade launcher and two radio communication sets from Puthukkudiyiruppu East. Snipers reported acquisition of 4 targets in the forward areas of Puthukkudiyiruppu East.

Meanwhile, troops of 55 Division marching south along the north-eastern coast further pushed their forward boundaries south of Puthumathaln. Troops crushed heavy terrorist resistance during the march.
