Take courageous, just measures required to curb terrorism

Four Mahanayake Theras yesterday told President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take courageous and just measures required to curb terrorism and other national issues, jointly with all political and religious leaders by shedding differences aside, without leaving any room for unnecessary foreign interference in order to safeguard the territorial integrity and peace and harmony of the country.

Most Ven Udugama Sri Rathanapala Buddha Rakkithabhidana Maha Vihara Vansika Syamopali Maha Nikaya Mahanayaka Thera, Asgiri Maha Viharaya, Kandy; Most Ven Tibbotuwawe Sri Siddhartha Sumangalabhidana Maha Vihara Vansika Syamopali Mahanikaya Mahanayaka Thera, Malwatu Maha Viharaya , Kandy, Most Ven Weweldeniye Medhalankarabhidana Ramanna Mahanikaya Mahanayaka Thera, Sasana Wardhana Pririvena, Mirigama and Most Ven Dawuldena Gnannissarabhidana Aarapura Mahanikaya

Most Ven Mahanayaka Thera, Vidya Vijayaramaya , Pagoda, Nugegoda in a letter to President Rajapaksa said: "In the past Sri Lanka had been an island of Dhamma (Dharmadweepa).

Even in the recent past all communities of the country acted with unity and integrity to bring about national, religious, social and cultural renaissance and to protect and maintain peace, harmony and liberty.

Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims in a bid to win independence acted with unity and deep dedication by observing Aparihani Dhamma of peaceful assembly, peaceful discussion and peaceful dispersal which led to the success of Lichchavi Kings as discoursed by the Buddha.

It is extremely pathetic to note that since recently, the whole country is on a down turn trend as a result of bitter, hatred, disunity and disharmony prevailing among certain sections of the community.

Prolonged prevalence of various types of threats leveled against all communities of the country pose great hindrances to the construction of prosperity, well - being and development in the country and to safeguard territorial integrity.

National, religious and political leaders should realise the gravity of these threats and take immediate measures jointly to identify and resolve their problems. Else, doors would be wide-opened to opportunists, individuals and organizations to take adverse measures both locally and internationally that are highly injurious to independence and the territorial integrity of the country.

Therefore it is hereby requested by the honour of the Sasana to take courageous and just measures required to curb terrorism and other national issues, jointly with all political and religious leaders by shedding differences aside, without leaving any room for unnecessary foreign interference in order to safeguard the territorial integrity and peace and harmony of the country.

We wish this meritorious deed would reach ultimate success with the blessings of the Triple Gem and the Most Sacred Tooth Relic."
