A group of 73 Tamil civilians who fled from LTTE terrorists in general area Piramanthalkulama, sought protection with troops of the 58 Division this morning (Feb 3), revealing what could be described the most treacherous acts against norms of modern civilization perpetrated by the internationally banned terrorist outfit.
LTTE while defying both the international media and aid agencies through propaganda footages have drawn large numbers of people into the battlefront across the declared no fire zones, through sheer intimidations, a military official said citing the escapees.
According to the civilians, the latest group of escapees from the LTTE captivity, terrorists are continuing with their heinous crimes unabated also keeping both civil servants and local aid workers under house custody. "People are given T-56 weapons, grenades, ammunition containers, RPGs following a few hours of 'crash weapon training' and sent to the battlefront along with their fighters", a civilian was quoted as saying. "We managed to flee after we were dragged to the LTTE forward lines. We left our weapons and made a desperate run across the thick jungle amidst a flurry of small arms fire from the LTTE. Some, we believe were caught by the LTTE, whose faith would be decided by the organization with severe punishment under 'treachery', the civilian further said.
Citing on the revelations made by the civilians, defence officials are of the view that stringent measures should be concentrated immediately to end the LTTE from taking on more civilians as victims for its separatist cause.
